AVENTURA, FL — A prominent Florida prosecutor, who provided legal analysis to “Larry King Live,” “Good Morning America,” “Dateline,” NBC, CNN, CBS News and other media organizations, was charged with stealing $42.93 worth of beauty products from a grocery store over the weekend. Stacey Honowitz, a 30-year veteran of the Florida State Attorney’s office and supervisor of the Sex Crimes and Child Abuse Unit in Broward County, was suspended from her post. She is charged with petty retail theft.
“We have been made aware of the incident by the prosecutor,” Constance Simmons of the Broward County State Attorney’s Office in Fort Lauderdale told Patch on Monday. “She has been suspended pending an administrative review.”
The 56-year-old Honowitz was arrested at the Publix supermarket on Saturday at 18995 Biscayne Boulevard in nearby Aventura, which is in Miami-Dade County.
“Ms. Honowitz selected three beauty products valued at $42.93 and concealed them in her purse,” arrest documents stated. The documents said that Honowitz paid for various other groceries totaling $124.16.
Honowitz describes herself as a “tenacious litigator” who has prosecuted high-profile cases in South Florida. “When she isn’t putting bad guys behind bars, Honowitz works to educate parents and children about child molestation and the importance of reporting abuse as the first step to healing,” acccording to the website.
“Honowitz is a passionate activist and guest lecturer who speaks about child sex abuse, the sensitive nature of these cases, navigation of the criminal justice system and the critical importance of open and honest communication with children,” the website said.
She is also the author of two books on molestation that are intended to be read with young children: “My Privates are Private” and “Genius with a Penis, Don’t Touch.”
Simmons of the Broward County State Attorney’s Office added that Honowitz would be using her vacation time until the investigation is complete.
